What to Do if Your Dog is Choking

Understanding the signs and how to help your dog when they’re choking is important. Here’s how to identify the signs, how to help, and ways to prevent it from happening.

Signs

There aren’t too many signs to identify, as the choking aspect happens quickly. Your dog may begin to start coughing or gagging. But even these actions are a sign that your dog can still get air in and out, and this is their body naturally trying to dislodge the object.

What to really look out for is when your dog is making no sound. If you see them begin to start doing a gagging motion and no sound is coming from them, then they are definitely choking. Other signs like pawing at their mouth and trying to whine can also happen.

How to Help

You’ll want to act fast, but carefully.

  1. First, have yourself or someone else brace your dog, so they won’t bite you or try to get away.
  1. Next, open their mouth both by pressing their upper lip on their upper teeth. This will help you see what’s potentially going on.
  1. If you’re able to see an object, gently reach into their mouth and slowly remove it. Be careful to not push the object further down your dog’s throat.

  1. If you’re unable to see the object, do not attempt to feel around for it, because you may end up pushing it deeper.
  1. For small dogs, you’ll pick them up by their thighs, so their upside down. Then shake them in a downwards motion a few times. Gravity should help dislodge the object. For large dogs, grab them below their rib cage and lift them up, leaving their front paws on the ground.
  1. If the above hasn’t worked, or instead of the above, you can try the Heimlich maneuver. You’ll want to place one hand on their back for support, and your other on their abdomen. Move your hand in an upward motion along their abdomen.
  1. Take them to the vet after the item has been removed. You want to make sure everything has come out of their throat, and if everything looks normal.

If your dog becomes unconscious at any time you’re trying to help them, or you can’t get the object out, take them to the vet immediately. Contact them to let them know your dog was choking and is unconscious, so they’re prepared to help when you arrive.

Prevention

Here are some ways to help prevent your dog from choking.

  1. If your dog is a fast eater, purchase a slow feeder bowl. It helps them eat slower, hence the name.
  1. Make sure your dog’s kibble is the right size for them.
  1. If your dog tends to gobble down their larger treats, break the treat up into smaller pieces.
  1. Keep a close eye on them when they’re playing with balls or plush toys.
  1. If you have sticks in your yard, either remove them or keep an eye on your dog so they don’t eat it.
