Seizures in Dogs: causes & what to do

Dogs cough just like humans do. Whether it’s to clear their throat or to get an itch out. But it’s important to understand that not every cough your dog produces is normal. Coughs can be repetitive, and can sound weird and concerning. Here’s why your dog is coughing, and what it may be.

There can be a number of reasons why your dog is coughing. I’ll go over the most common.

Kennel cough

If you’ve recently boarded your dog at a kennel, they most likely contracted kennel cough. If your dog shows any sign of coughing after they’ve been to a kennel or a similar facility, then you need to take them to the vet.

Your vet will prescribe you medication to treat the cough. If you don’t treat your dog in the early stage of kennel cough, it will get progressively worse. It’s best if your dog gets a vaccine to prevent kennel cough before boarding them at a kennel.

Irritation

If you notice your dog having a cough that sounds like their gagging, their throat is probably irritated. They could either have something stuck in their airway, or it could be some sort of infection. Schedule an appointment with your vet to find out what the problem is and how your dog can get better.

Heart disease

One of the signs of heart disease is when your dog lies down, and they start coughing. The reason for coughing while lying down is because fluid is building up around the lungs. This is a serious issue, because your dog is prone to congestive heart failure. Your dog needs to go to the vet right away for treatment options.

Pneumonia

If your dog’s cough sounds wet or gurgly, then they may have pneumonia or fluid in their lungs. Take your dog to the vet as soon as you notice this type of cough because it will get worse. If it is pneumonia, it’s best to ask your vet what caused your dog to contract the illness, so it doesn’t happen again.

Tracheal prolapse

This typically happens with smaller dog breeds. If you have a small dog, it’s important that you walk with the suitable equipment, such as a harness. This cough can sound dry and goose-like. If your dog has this problem, ask your vet about treatment options.
