Every dog collar isn’t used for walking or for putting on fancy tags. They’re all used for a different purpose, whether it’s for training or tough pullers. Here are some of the different types of dog collars:
Flat collar
A flat collar should only be used for your pup’s name tag. Using a regular flat collar for walking could lead to your dog slipping out of it.
Harness
A harness should be considered based on your dog’s size, and possibly age. Smaller breeds like miniature poodles and chihuahuas have a delicate trachea, so this is the best choice for them. If you’re training your new puppy on how to go on walks, then a harness is also a good choice. Make sure your dog’s harness is secure because there is a chance they may be able to slip out of it. There are lots of different types of harnesses, so you may want to do some research to give you an idea which one is right for your dog.
Chain choker
A choker should be used for training purposes. These need to be sized properly for your dogs neck, as well as put on correctly in order for the collar to function. Despite the name, these collars are not meant to choke your dog. When your dog pulls, the collar tightens around the neck letting them know they’re pulling. When your dog realizes they’re pulling, they will ease up causing the collar to loosen again.
Half choker/martingale collar
These help with pulling, and dogs who tend to slip out of their collars. These collars should be sized properly, otherwise they could slip off or be too tight for your dog’s neck. The only difference from the chain choker is that these collars look similar to a flat collar, but have three rings and an extra loop as shown in the pictures here. When your dog pulls, this loop and three rings form a triangle shape. When your dog is walking normally, the collar will sit comfortably around their neck.
Prong
This collar can also be used for training, similar to the chain choker. These are used for dogs that pull too much. Despite how these may look, they will not hurt your dog. The ends of the prongs are rounded, not sharp. When your dog starts pulling, they should stop from the discomfort of the rounded prongs poking at their neck, causing the collar to loosen.
Conclusion
A harness or a martingale collar is the best way to go for walking your dog. These will be the most comfortable for your dog.
You shouldn’t expect your dog to pick up knowing how to properly walk right away. It’s your responsibility to train them on how to walk normally by your side. The chain, martingale, and prong are not meant to be used if your dog is a constant puller, this could damage their neck area. If your dog is a constant puller, look into training solutions to help.
