How to Walk Your Puppy

Training your puppy how to walk is essential. It introduces them to the outside world, gives them exercise, and it can help the bond between you two even stronger.

What you’ll need:

  • A leash– This should be between 4-6ft.
  • A harness– This walking equipment is a great way to start walks with your puppy. Make sure it’s properly sized so it’s not too tight or loose.
  • Poop bags– No one likes stepping in dog poop, so make sure to clean up after your dog.
  • Treats– These will be used to help the training process to get your pup’s attention, as well as a reward for good behavior.

How to start

This will depend on how eager your puppy is to explore the outside world. Whether they’re eager or hesitant, you’ll need to have patience and plenty of encouragement.

Begin by practicing putting on their harness and leash, then let them walk around inside your home or your yard if you have one. This will help them get used to wearing these, as well as let them know these items are safe.

Once they get used to this, you can take the leash and practice walking them around your home or yard. Say their name and then the word ‘come’ or ‘let’s go’ or ‘walk’. If they listen, reward them with a treat and praise.

Leveling up

After practicing inside or in your yard for a while, try getting some distance away from your home. As soon as you’re out the door, give them a treat and praise. From the start, they may just sniff around for a bit instead of wanting to walk. If this is the case for you, call their name and say one of the commands mentioned above. When they listen, offer them a treat.

Give them treats and praise anytime you deem fit. It can be for when they’ve gone to the bathroom, walked a certain distance, crossed the street, looked at you for approval, etc. When you’ve arrived home again, remember to congratulate them a ton!

You as the owner have to be patient with your puppy’s progress. It won’t take a day for them to learn how to walk. You can start teaching them commands such as ‘heel’ when you think they’re ready, as well as focusing on them walking right by your side.
