Should You Let Your Dog Sleep in Your Bed?

We all love to cuddle with our dogs, some of us more than others, and some of us may take this to the next level by letting them sleep in the bed at night. But is this a good idea?

Here are the pros and cons of letting your dog sleep in your bed with you:

Pros

  • It’s a bonding experience. Cuddling with your dog during sleep will allow the two of you to grow closer with one another.
  • It will allow your dog to feel safer, less anxious, and/or more comfortable.
  • It may even help your overall mood if you’re stressed, anxious, or sad.

Cons

  • Your bedding and sheets will need to be washed more frequently due to your dog’s hair, potential flees, and the dirt they track in.
  • You may wake up more frequently if your pooch likes to move around a lot. Or even from their body temperature providing the extra heat.
  • Some dogs are more protective of their owner than others. So if you have a partner that visits every so often, or just moved in, your dog may get jealous.

Conclusion

Unless you’re a super light sleeper or a germophobe, having your dog sleep in your bed with you is totally fine. The only time it isn’t a good idea to let them sleep with you is when they’re a puppy. This can lead to separation anxiety, and it may even be harder to potty/crate train them. So after they’ve learned potty and crate training, you can let them sleep with you every once in a while.

Personally, I let my dogs sleep in my bed in the early hours of the morning. They always need to go potty in the morning, so after they finish I let them climb into bed for a few hours.
