How often you should bathe your dog is going to depend on their hair type, skin, and how active they are. The weather can also play a role as rain and melted snow make the ground wet and muddy.

Hair type

If your dog has short hair, then you don’t have to bathe them that often. If your dog has hair on the longer side, however, they’re going to have to be bathed more often due to the dirt that will get stuck to their long locks.

So the average amount of time between baths is about once every 1-3 months. For longer haired dogs this can be the same amount or every 4-6 weeks.

Regularly grooming your dog will also keep their hair and coat healthy, so it’s okay if your dog gets a little dirty everyday. You can brush the dirt out or wipe it off with a wet towel.

Skin

If your dog has allergies or skin problems such as itching or hair loss, they’ll need to be bathed more frequently. To help with these issues, they’ll most likely need a special shampoo. Make sure to consult with your vet to know which shampoo to use and how often you should bathe your dog.

Depending on what your vet says, the amount of baths needed can range from every week to every two weeks.

Activity level

If your dog loves to be outside all the time, roll in the dirt, swim in a lake, or run through the sand at the beach, then they’ll definitely need a bath more often.

Depending how dirty they get, you may not even need to shampoo them. You can just give them a quick rinse. If you prefer to shampoo them, however, make sure to use a moisturizing conditioner so their skin doesn’t dry out from frequent bathing.
