Dogs NOT for First-Time Owners

If you’ve never had a dog before or never helped take care of one, you’ll want to consider what you want in a dog, as well as what you can handle before adopting.

Siberian Husky

These cute sled dogs can be very vocal, and have a lot of personality. These dogs require long walks and maybe even a few miles of running. Huskies were bred to run while pulling a sled, so if they don’t get some sort of task to do, they can be very destructive. They also have a thick coat that requires a lot of upkeep.

Border Collie

This dog breed is extremely smart and hard working. They require lots of exercise and daily activity. If Border Collie’s don’t have a task to do a majority of the day, they’ll become restless and even destructive. They are big shedders and need regular grooming.

Akita

Known for the tear jerking movie Hatchi, this dog breed is very loveable and protective. They’re so protective over their owners/family they can be aggressive towards strangers and other pets. Akita’s need lots of socialization and training from a young age. They also have a thick coat that requires a decent amount of grooming.

Belgian Malinois

Like the Border Collie, the Malinois needs tasks to do throughout the day. This medium-sized dog has a lot of energy and strength, and they love to work. They’re very smart and excel at training. Without basic training and plenty of tasks to complete, they can be very destructive and restless.

Bloodhound

These stubborn trackers will drag their owner everywhere if they’re not trained properly. Unless you’re an outdoorsy or hunting person, these dogs will need some sort of activity to do throughout the day. You will need to be patient when training them on walks, since they’ll be wanting to sniff and explore the whole park or neighborhood. This breed tends to have eye and skin problems as well.

Dalmatian

This breed was originally bred to run alongside carriages, and then worked with firefighters clearing a path for the fire engine. Although this breed is listed in the non-sporting group, they are highly active and need lots of exercise throughout the day. Dalmatians are independent and stubborn, so training from an early age is essential.

Weimaraner

Weimaraners need an active owner. These dogs love to exercise and be with their owner(s). If they don’t receive training from a young age, they can be destructive and tough to handle. They also need plenty of socialization, since they can have a dominating nature towards other dogs and pets.

Beagle

Beagles are very independent and want to do their own thing. They were bred to hunt, so they love to sniff everything on walks and ignore their owners. Their bark is loud and notorious. Training can be difficult as they’re very stubborn.

There’s obviously more dogs from the list I didn’t name, but from the dogs listed above they’re not recommended for people that are considering owning a dog for the first time. If you’re looking to adopt one of these dogs as a first time owner, make sure you prepare and do your research on the breed. You also want to make sure your lifestyle will be a match for that specific dog breed, or adjust yourself to work with that dog. Both you and your new companion should be happy on a daily basis together.
