How often you feed your dog depends on their age, weight, and how your dog decides to eat.
How often
Your dog should at least eat twice a day, or every 8-12 hours. Waiting more than 12 hours can cause nausea, just like us when we haven’t eaten for a long time. If you just adopted a puppy, they may need to eat up to 3x a day in order to get the proper nutrients. Even if your dog is an adult, their food can be split into 3x a day rather than 2.
How much
This is easy to figure out, because on every bag of dog food is a table that shows the amount of food you should feed your dog per day. This depends on your dog’s weight and age. For example, when my lab mix was a puppy, based on his age and weight at the time, his daily intake was 4 ½ cups of kibble per day.
Eating habits
How a dog eats their food can vary. Most dogs are fine with eating 2 meals per day, others may just graze at their food throughout the day. If your dog is the type to graze at their food, make sure to give them the proper amount for a day, as well as switch out leftover food each day.
If your dog has a difficult time or is not willing to eat a days worth of food for more than 2-3 days, contact your vet.
Some dogs may prefer to eat 3x a day. If you notice your dog is hungry between their breakfast and dinner time, you should consider feeding them lunch. A way you can do this is by splitting their daily intake into 3 servings.
If your dog still seems hungry after 3 meals, something may be wrong and you should contact your vet.
