When should you be concerned with your dog’s stool? Even if you hate looking at poop, it’s important to always look at your dog’s poop to make sure their gut is doing great! Here are the 5 different types of stool to be familiar with.

Hard

If your dog’s stool looks hard or they’re having a hard time trying to poop, this is a sign your dog is dehydrated, which can lead to constipation. Make sure your dog is drinking enough water throughout the day. If your dog doesn’t have the urge to drink any water at all, contact your veterinarian; it could be something more serious.

Normal

Nothing to worry about. If your dog is having an easy time pooping, and if the poo looks like a normal turd, then their gut is healthy! If you’re a new dog owner, make sure to learn what their normal everyday stool looks like.

Soft

This poo will look a bit watery, but still kind of solid. This is a sign that your dog may have eaten something that they’re not supposed to/something that’s disrupting their diet. If you know what they ate, make sure to not let them eat it again, since it could lead to something worse.

Diarrhea/watery

This type of stool can occur when your dog eats something that disrupts their diet. This could also be a sign that they’re sick or they may have a virus. It’s a good idea to feed them rice and some bone broth to help them get better. If this continues for more than 3-5 days, with no signs of improvement, you should take your dog to the vet.
