Let’s visit Japan and say hello to the breed known as Kai Ken!
This dog breed is one of the rarest breeds in the world, especially in its homeland of Japan! It’s even said that Kai Ken’s are an ancient dog breed that naturally thrived in the wild in the Mount Fuji area. Since they were once a wild dog breed, and had no interbreeding influence, they have one of the purest bloodlines among dogs. It wasn’t until the early 1930s when this dog breed was recognized by Japan as a national monument.
Their look
Like other Japanese Spitz breeds, the Kai Ken have pointy ears with a curled tail. The breed’s name, Kai Ken, comes from the area they were discovered in: Kai Province. But they are also called Tora Inu, which translates to Tiger Dog as their coat resembles a Tiger’s brindle fur. Kai Ken’s come in three different colors: black brindle, brindle, and red brindle.
Personality
The personality of the Kai Ken is no different than any other Japanese Spitz breed. When training them it’s important to be patient and positive. They are very loyal, protective, highly active, and of course very stubborn. They’re also known for being great watch and hunting dogs.
Health
Depending on the gender, this breed stands between 17-22 in. and weighs 25-45 lbs. Kai Kens are generally a healthy breed. Although they may suffer from some of the common health conditions just like any other dog breed. As mentioned above, Kai Kens are a rare breed. If you’re looking to adopt this breed, it may be difficult to find a breeder in the U.S. rather than in Japan.
