Ever heard of the term “Keeping the lions at bay”? Well the Rhodesian Ridgeback is the breed that coined it! These dogs are sometimes called the African Lion Hound because they hunted lions!
This breed was developed in South Africa by mixing a variety of European breeds with a native South African breed. As a result, a large dog with a lot of energy, phenomenal durability, and intelligence was born.
Their look
Other than their shiny red golden coat, this breed has a unique trait about them. So why are they called the Rhodesian Ridgeback? A breeding program was started in Rhodesia which is now the country of Zimbabwe, but the name for the dog stuck. As for the Ridgeback part, this breed has a unique line of hair along their spine that grows in the opposite direction than the rest of the hair on their body!
Personality
Since they originated in Africa, they can endure extreme heat temperatures, and withstand rough terrains due to their tough paw pads. These dogs require tons and tons of exercise & activity throughout the day; it’s no surprise, since they used to hunt down lions.
Along with their high activity level, Rhodesian Ridgebacks are challenging to train. They are very independent, so they are not recommended for first time owners. They can adapt in any home environment as long as they have plenty of activity. Since they are so rambunctious and have an independent nature, training and socialization is highly recommended at an early stage.
Health
Standing at 24-27 in. and weighing 70-85 lbs, Rhodesian Ridgebacks are generally a healthy breed. Although they may suffer from some of the common health conditions just like any other dog breed. One thing to look out for, though, is Dermoid sinus: a skin defect that is tube shaped; caused by incomplete separation of the skin and spine. If you’re thinking about adopting this breed, it’s best to find a reputable breeder and ask about the parent history.
