Taking your dog on vacation is always fun, but depending where the trip is, they can’t always come along.
If you don’t have a family member to watch your dog, then the next best thing is either a pet sitter or the kennel.
Here’s what you should know before boarding your dog at a kennel…
Getting Started
First you’ll want to do some research on some kennels in your area, and make sure to do an in-person tour of the facility. Make sure to ask questions about how your dog will be spending their days there, and what type of activities are offered.
Once you’ve decided on a place, the staff should let you know which vaccines your dog will need to be up to date on.
Packing for your dog
- Most kennels provide kibble to dogs that board with them, but it would be better to pack the food you’re already using, so your dog’s diet isn’t disrupted.
- Treats, if you’re the type of owner to give your pup a treat every day
- A toy or two, if your dog has a favorite
- Medication, if your dog is on any
- Bedding, however, most kennels can provide some type of bedding for your dog if needed
Kennels love instructions for how to feed and/or medicate your dog. Make sure you write these instructions down on a piece of paper for the staff.
Concerns
You can call the kennel to see how your dog is doing. And if anything serious were to happen while your dog was at the facility, the staff would notify you.
Returning Home
There is a chance your dog may be a little different when they come home. They can be clingy or even have diarrhea. This is normal, however, if these bowel movements continue or worsen, you and your dog should visit the vet.
