This unique dog breed is seen in the Pixar movie Coco as the main character’s spirit guide. Today we’ll say hello to the Xoloitzcuintli, a rare dog breed that ruled alongside the Mayans and Aztecs!
Background
Coming from Mexico, this hairless dog breed has been around for over 3,500 years! Xoloitzcuintli, or Xolo for short, is pronounced like show-low-eats-quint-lee. These dogs were bred to be guard dogs, as the Aztecs believed the Xolo would protect them throughout their life and guide them into the afterlife. It was said they had healing powers and would ward off evil. Their name literally means god dog!
Their look
Xolos are hairless, although they may have some hair on the top of their head, tail, and feet. The color of their skin can either be black, gray, red/brown, or spotted skin. They come in three different sizes: toy, miniature, and standard. So their size can range from 10-23 in. tall, and they can weigh between 10-50 lbs.
Personality
Today, these dogs are designated to the non-sporting group within the American Kennel Club. The Xolo can be very very protective of their owner(s). Although they are generally calm in nature, they are highly athletic. It’s important for them to receive a moderate amount of exercise every day. They’re generally easy to train, with the right amount of consistency and reinforcement.
Health
The Xolo is a generally healthy breed. Although they may suffer from some of the common health conditions just like any other dog breed. Since they’re a hairless breed, it’s important to protect them from the cold weather, as well as the sun’s UV rays. For colder weather it’s best to have a winter jacket. No matter the temperature the sun’s rays can be harmful for a hairless breed, so dog safe sunscreen should be applied.
